Peter Moore Reveals EA's Plans for More "Westernized" Wii Fit

After declaring that they need to do better on Wii, EA Sports President and former phys-ed instructor Peter Moore recently revealed a more casual-oriented sports lineup called "Freestyle" that everyone can play, and it would seem that a part of that initiative involves the use of the Wii Balance Board which is included in Wii Fit.

This new game, he says, will instead focus on "western" cardio workouts, rather than the "eastern holistic fitness" provided by Wii Fit. He goes on to tell Eurogamer that their version of the game is intended to make people sweat, while still having fun.

Moore didn't delve into specifics, but did reveal that the key to their plan is to distract the player by making them have so much fun that they don't realize they're also getting a workout. "It can't feel like a workout," he says. ""The team has to figure out, how do I smile while I'm doing this? You play soccer for 90 minutes; if I say you're going to run five miles you're not gonna want to do that. But you run for five miles playing soccer and you've had a good time."

"The difference is you're distracted. We need to distract people and not make this exercise feel like work, but like they're having fun. So mini-games, things where you're actually laughing out loud, that's the stuff we're working on. It's something I've always been passionate about, and who better than us to go and play in that market?"

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Kid_Icarus_Wii_Concept_Artwork_Revealed'; digg_skin ='';
Earlier this year, we broke the news that Factor 5 is working internally to revive the beloved Kid Icarus franchise. Although we do not have much new information in regards to the project, we have acquired nearly 30 pieces of concept art for the game, showing various different versions of Pit's new design, plus concept work for some of his weapons.

More artwork inside.

Rumor: IGN Basically Confirms Kid Icarus Wii

The "rumored" existence of Kid Icarus on the Wii has been floating around for some time now, entering and exiting the sphere of confirmed reality on multiple occasions. We've reported on the game multiple times, even to the point of naming a developer for it (Factor 5), and with the reappearance of Pit in Brawl, it's seemed like a done deal to me for a long time. I'm not alone -- IGN Wii's Matt Casamassina basically talks as if the game's existence is plain old fact. Says he on this week's IGN podcast:

"Kid Icarus, that's another one that I'm really anticipating just because I love the franchise and I'm sure that the developer will make a really pretty game."

No ambiguity there. Maybe Matty C. got so used to talking about the game with his Nintendo buddies that he can just throw around its name casually. And what about that talk of it being "really pretty" based on the developer? We all know there's one studio that's always delivered outstanding visuals on Nintendo systems...remember that one Star Wars game?

Just to be safe, we're still tagging this bad boy with the rumor header, though it seems pretty set in stone to me while we wait for any official announcements come E3.

GameStop: No More Preorders for Wii Fit

IGN has just received confirmation from GameStop that they are no longer accepting preorders for Nintendo's next big thing, Wii Fit, which will be available in just 12 days. The reason the king of preorders is no longer taking preorders?

Simply put, all the units for which the store has been allotted have been reserved.

In addition, Game Crazy is faring only just a little better, as it's reported that most locations are sold out of preorders, though a few locations are accepting "second orders" from those who have already preordered. Go figure... is anyone actually taking advantage?

Even though the stores are out, GameStop's website seems to be accepting online orders, though no telling how long that will last. It's suggested that while GameStop and Game Crazy's supplies may be exhausted, big-box retailers such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Target are more likely to have plenty in stock, as they don't take preorders (even though Wal-Mart's website has a pretty good deal going if you pay in advance).

Nintendo Channel Launched in US of A and Its Hat

Good news, everyone! If you've just woken up and noticed that your Wii is glowing with a blue light, then first of all, don't worry, it's not contagious.

Actually, it would seem to be the sign that Nintendo of America has finally launched the Nintendo Channel, which was originally scheduled to be released alongside WiiWare on May 12th. For those that have forgotten, the Nintendo Channel is Nintendo's method of promoting Nintendo from within Nintendo, with previews, news, and information about Wii and DS games, plus downloadable demos for your Nintendo DS.

A rather thorough catalog of Nintendo and third-party Wii and DS titles is also available, with information on the games, videos, and even links to websites where you can purchase the products. In addition, you can also rate any game you've spent more than an hour with, so other people will know just how much you hate Ninjabread Man... oh, wait, maybe not (that'd require spending an hour with it).

It's a free download, with nothing to lose but a little space on your Wii's internal memory, but if you've already got the Forecast, Everybody Votes, and Check Mii Out Channels, then this one will probably be a must as well, and it's unlikely you'll miss the space.

Media: LEGO Batman's Pictures Are Dead

Good news/bad news time, kiddos! The good news is, we have new LEGO Batman screenshots! The bad news is, with the title available for pretty much every active platform under the sun, these are actually from the PC version. But the good news is, it's friggin' LEGO, so I doubt there's really all that much of a difference. And as for the inclusion into the DS and PSP sets, well, there's not really anything else, and it's doubtful that they'll look that much worse, even then.

It's the small touches you have to appreciate, such as Two-Face flipping a LEGO stud there. Plus, as you can see here, Batman has costumes with both the old "yellow moon" bat-symbol, and the original/recent plain bat.

Fun fact: The reason for the addition of the yellow circle was because DC couldn't trademark a plain bat by itself. Makes you wonder if the law changed, or if maybe just using a more stylized bat is what got them by.

Who Says a New Kid Icarus Wouldn't Sell Well?

Didn't think I'd be doing this again, at least so soon after last time, wherein I basically followed up another article with some thoughts of my own, and people not reading the first, or even either article before they set their blasters to full power. So, to get it out of the way, either be sure to read what's written, preferably both pieces, or just skip the whole thing.

Anyway, Matt Behrens at N-Sider gave his thoughts on the rumored Wii Kid Icarus, posing the question as to whether or not it's even a remotely good idea for Nintendo or not, and how such a venture could possibly even be doomed.

They key focus seems to be awareness of the character and product as the driving force behind the success of a new game, and seems to base the argument that other than diehard Nintendo fans, there would be no audience for the game. That without the immense success and notoriety held by Zelda, that a new Kid Icarus could not fly.

Thinking Out Loud: Mario Kart Wii and DLC

Other than some Sony stories, the usual GTA nonsense, and girls with confidence issues, it's been a relatively slow day so far, and that's allowed me a little time to think about a recent release I hope to get for myself soon: Mario Kart Wii, and just wanted to think out loud here about a possibility.

The biggest grievance people have with the game has to be-- no, not the Wii Wheel; I'd say people are fairly evenly divided on that, believe it or not. No, it'd have to be Nintendo's cannibalization of the Battle Mode. While I'm sure no one objects to the concept, or even the use of the team play, I don't think anyone wanted it to replace the last-man-standing, king-of-the-hill free-for-all (Double Dash? Meet Septuple Dash. We aren't "Kombo" for nothing).

That leads me to wonder about the Mario Kart Channel available on the Wii, and all the downloadable ghosts. Such things must surely take a decently-sized chunk of memory to store. It leads me to wonder if perhaps downloadable content is possible.

Of course, I don't mean things that the Wii probably can't handle, like new courses, new characters, karts, or whatever (though one must also wonder if the storage solution they're working on could). But what about some nips, tucks, and tweaks to the code. Might it be possible for Nintendo to adjust the "rules" as it were for Battle Mode to allow for free-for-alls (maybe less players, even)? Just some food for thought...

...not that I really expect Nintendo to do it. But I can't help but wonder if the Wii, as it is, could handle it if they wanted to.

Random Video of the Day: Colbert Jealous of Miyamoto

If you will kindly recall a story from last week, Miyamoto took the #1 spot in Time Magazine's list of the most influential people in America, beating out the likes of Rain (wtf?) and Stephen Colbert.

As it happens, Colbert, in his own inimmitable style, took exception to this:

Of course, it sounds like Rain is going to get it a lot worse. But what happens when that's settled, and there's no one but Miyamoto between Colbert and the top?

Wii Fit: Not for the Sensitive Player

Looks like Grand Theft Auto may not be the only title that stirs peoples' emotions in the coming weeks.

It seems there is someone from the UK DIS boards that is "dis"gusted with Wii Fit, writing that her ten-year old relative was quite distraught when the program told her that she was a little on the heavy side:

We have all laughed and joked about being told that we're fat and need to lose weight but I was gobsmacked when it told her that she is overweight. She is a healthy 10 year old girl with an active lifestyle, she swims and dances every week. She is 92lbs and 4ft9" tall and there is not an inch of fat on her. She is solidly built but not fat. She was devasted to be called fat and we had to work hard to convince her that she isn't.

She goes on to say that first there's the media's portayal of "healthy" with absurdly skinny models, etc., etc., and now we have to deal with a game telling kids they're fat, and of course, a letter to Nintendo was written expressing the concerns.

Nintendo could find itself in some hot water in the coming months if similar incidents occur upon the US release of Wii Fit. On the other hand, a reply indicates that it may simply be that the game wasn't calibrated right.

Nintendo to Launch Wii Fit with Central Park Event on May 19th

No doubt as a part of their huge marketing push, Nintendo is preparing to launch Wii Fit to the masses on May 19th with an all-day event (well, as all-day as 8am-5pm can be, anyway), not at the usual Nintendo World Store location, but rather in Central Park. In addition, the event will double as a celebration of May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

And for everyone who gives Wii Fit a try, Nintendo will make a donation of five dollars (up to $25,000 total) to the American Heart Association. Plus, celebrity trainer Ashley Borden will be putting in an appearance as well.

The event will be held at the Central Park Merchant's Gate, located at the intersection of Central Park West, Central Park South, Columbus Circle and Broadway in Manhattan.

Capcom: Monster Hunter 3 "Looks Amazing"

I recently got into Capcom's Monster Hunter games. So far, the series has scratched my proverbial itch for dino slayin', armor craftin' and loot whorin'. Though the release of certain monster titles as well as other handheld RPGs have stalled my exploration of the franchise, I'm still super psyched about Monster Hunter 3 for the Wii, and am even moreso now that some initial, albeit entirely vague, reports from Capcom US are saying that the game is living up to its pedigree.

Fielding questions from fans about MH3, Capcom community manager Seth Killian remarked on his recent peek at the game.

"I saw an a non-final build when I was in Osaka recently and it already looks amazing," he said.

Asked whether "looks amazing" means the graphics or otherwise, Killian said: "I was impressed by every part of the game." No mention of control schemes, online content, or otherwise.

Nintendo's coup of the previously Sony-exclusive franchise might not mean much here in the States where its popularity is decidedly niche, but its significance can't be understated in a country where Wiis sell faster than bibles and Monster Hunter 2nd Portable G just recently shipped 2 million copies. That Capcom guys are talking about MH3 with its Stateside fans could just be nice community interaction, or it could hint at a possible release on English-speaking shores, which, all things considered, would seem more than likely to me.

Amazon Sells Out of Wii Fit Before the Game is Even Released

Wii Fit doesn't release until May 21st, but that doesn't mean it can't be sold-out already. Indeed, that's just the case at Amazon.com, which claims to be sold-out of its pre-sale copies of the title. The site has a message on its Wii Fit page, saying that it is "actively seeking more of this product from suppliers," however.

I've managed to pack on a few unwanted pounds over the last few months, so I am actually looking forward to Wii Fit. I've played the game a few times at different events and expos, and it's kinda fun if you give it a chance. We'll see if it can help me shed those unwanted pounds, though.

The concept between the two isn't the same, necessarily, but the way the character moves onscreen resonates well with the upcoming PS3 game. See what you think:

Ubisoft: New Prince of Persia "Never" Coming to Wii

News that Ubisoft's latest entry in the Prince of Persia series would be coming to the PS3, 360 and even the DS but not the Wii left us wondering last week why Nintendo's console was being left high and dry by the PoP team.

Now comes word that the Prince of Persia franchise will indeed be making an appearance on the Wii, but not in the form of a port in any sort.

"You would never see a port of the game we're making however. That'll never happen," a Ubisoft representative says in an interview in the latest issue of EDGE.

Instead, the Wii iteration will consist of some spin-off or side-story.

"It's connected to the game in a very interesting way, but it's not a port," Ubisoft explained. "A complementary experience, shall we say?"

Getting some serious Soul Calibur Legends vibes off this one, guys.
