"PSP Needs More Games," Admits SCEE President Reeves

Some might say that the problem exists everywhere, but Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's President David Reeves admits that their platform with the emphasis on being Portable is suffering from a lack of games in that region.

Even though there are new functions, such as Go! Explore satellite-navigation application and cross-platform functions with the monolithic PlayStation 3, Sony's recent Gamer's Day saw only two games, Echocrome and Buzz! Quiz Master, mentioned during their one and one-half hour presentation.

"Hand on heart, would we like more PSP games? Yes, we would. We really would," Reeves told GamesIndustry.biz.

PSP-exclusive content seems to be on the downturn, though companies such as Sierra are still developing games for the eight-year old PlayStation 2, with the majority of what's left being larger licenses such as WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 and LEGO Indiana Jones (available for all major gaming platforms).

Rumor: Wipeout Pulse and Daxter to Jump to PS2

Coming out of Jeuxvideo.fr, rumor has it that a pair of PSP games, Wipeout Pulse and Daxter, will be following in the footsteps of other PSP games and making the jump to the similarly-capable PlayStation 2. Of course, such a move often leads some to believe that their PSP investments have been devalued, but these ports usually come out well after they've had their day in the sun on the PSP. Plus, the PS2 versions aren't portable.

Incidently, on a related note, it still irks me quite a bit that Capcom hasn't made a similar move with their well-received but low-selling titles Mega Man Powered Up and Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X, two great titles which came out when the PSP just wasn't doing very well as a platform.

They really deserve a better chance than they were given, especially if there's ever to be any hope of a sequel to either. Hell, toss them both on a disc together for the PS2 or Wii. Make them Digital Content for the PS3 and 360. Don't let them go to waste!

Clank Gets a Date on PSP

Just got off the horn with Sony, and great news! Clank has a date! Check him out, will you? He's got the suit going on and everything; whoever it is, he'll knock them dead. Clank will wine 'em and dine 'em, maybe take her to see Iron Man (rumor is he has a certain unstated affinity for Shellhead)...

Sniff, our little robot... he's all grown up. And now... whup, hang on a sec, telephone.

Oh... how awkward. Turns out, Clank has a release date, for his new PSP title, Secret Agent Clank. Well, now isn't this embarrassing?

Yeah, actually, as it turns out, last week Sony had a Vegas-style Casino Night going with some Blackjack to celebrate the release and brief the press (no Canucks allowed, apparently). Previews are starting to pop up from those other guys, but we can at least say this much: Secret Agent Clank will be sneaking into stores on June 17th.

Forget the DS, Where's the Love for the PSP?

The March NPD numbers came out yesterday and as I examined the hardware and software sales something caught my attention that I'm sure many people overlooked. Despite not making a big bang in the hardware sales department—or even in software—the PSP has been picking up steam as of late. You can't sit at your computer right now and straight-out deny that the PSP hasn't caught your attention lately with unique titles like Patapon, Crisis Core, God of War, and other upcoming titles like Echochrome. Go on and look at your DS, I bet it is covered in dust. So stop lying to yourself and admit you have thought about looking into a PSP purchase lately, and why not? It has been 3 long years since the PSP's introduction to the handheld realm, and each year it acquires more and more unique games to catch the interest of gamers everywhere.

Sony: "If You Can't Beat Homebrewers, Poll Em'"

Gaming is characterized by war; whether it's seen in top-sellers like Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 or in the oft-discussed Console Wars, gaming may very well be the one thing war is good for. There exists, however, a war that only the most obsessive gamers know of and even fewer participate in: Sony vs. homebrew.

Since the day the PSP first hit shelves, subversive consumers have been busting through the walls of constant PSP firmware updates that address "security issues." With each headline proclaiming "Firmware Cracked!" Sony cooks up a new puzzle for intrepid homebrew supporters to solve. And generally, they solve it with startling speed. As such, it seems Sony's finally stopped resisting homebrew outright, instead opting to learn about the group that's giving them so much trouble.

Through a poll sent to select gamers, Sony hopes to discover what makes homebrew users tick. The poll presents gamers with a veritable mixing pot of questions -- from the typical ("Do you know of anyone who has hacked, or modified, transferred and customized their PSP firmware and software?") to the probing ("Does hacking make you feel like a rebel?").

With any luck, Sony will finally stop trying to impede homebrew's progress; if nothing else, this poll is a decent first step.

Review: Sony Brings flOw to the PSP

With the surprise attention of flOw that helped jump start the PlayStation Network for the PS3, it was only a matter of time before it appeared on the PSP. The simple, elegant graphics showed the PS3 was capable of a range of styles. For gamers who have missed out on the experience, they can now take it on their PSP to play anywhere.

Rumor: LittleBigPlanet Heading to PSP

According to sources close to CVG, LittleBigPlanet is in development for the PSP at Sony Studio Liverpool, which may be best known for their Wipeout titles on the handheld.

No other details were offered as to how the game would play on the PSP, although if the game is in fact real, expectations are being able to link up with LittleBigPlanet on the PS3 to transfer content back and forth.

Currently, the PS3 version of LittleBigPlanet is scheduled for a Fall 2008 release in North America. Kombo will update the scene for you if we hear anything further regarding the possibility of LittleBigPlanet PSP.

Latest PSP Update Brings Mappable Controls for PSone Games

Sony's latest Blog update reveals the latest in the ever-long strand of firmware updates for the PSP handheld. The latest is version 3.95 (supposedly out soon) and brings new functionality to the PSone software and Remote Play features. The following text comes right from the source:
-While playing PSone games on your PSP, you can now customize how the buttons are assigned by going to [Controller Settings] > [Assign Buttons] and select [Custom].

-You can now quit Remote Play and choose to turn off your PS3 or leave it on after quitting. This is useful if you are performing a download and want to quit Remote Play, but still want your download to continue on the PS3. Select [Quit and Turn Off the PS3 System] or [Quit Without Turning Off the PS3 System] from [Quit Remote Play] when you press the HOME button on the PSP system.
Not a bad update for PSP owners, we say.

Gran Turismo Mobile Still In Development; Release Planned for Next Year

For Gran Turismo fans, getting any info on Polyphony's mobile version on the PSP has been quite difficult. Ever since first being shown off back at E3 2004, there has been speculation that the title was in serious trouble and was canned. Even GameStop reportedly wound up canceling any preorders the company had taken.

However, Gran Turismo creator and Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi recently spoke with VideoGamer.com and gave a status update on Gran Turismo Mobile, basically explaining that the title is still alive but most likely won't arrive until next year.

"We're hoping to have it out by next year, during next year," explained Yamauchi. "A lot of our efforts have been consumed by the amount of effort it takes to develop on PS3, so hopefully we'll be able to rebalance it next year."

Looks like there is still quite a wait ahead of us, but seeing as how we've been waiting for four years already, what's another year?

Echochrome Only Available on PSN for US

Sorry physical media whores, but Sony's dimension-bending puzzler Echochrome will only be available as a downloadable title on the PSN's PS Store, according to CVG.

Compared to the situation in Japan, where the title is available both as a downloadable and in UMD format, Stateside gamers won't be able to walk in to their local game shop and purchase a physical copy.

This doesn't mean the game's getting gimped for online distribution though, as all 56 brain-busting levels will remain intact. Just think of it as more shelf space for that ever-expanding PSP library of yours.

Sony Says: Portable Copy Hitting PSP This Year

After an earlier disappointment in that PSP users the world over would not yet be able to take their favorite Blu-ray titles with them on the go, Kotaku, in a seething rage, hunted down someone from Sony for some answers.

After pleas for mercy fell on deaf ears, the fallen SCEA rep finally confessed that according to Sony Pictures, they expect to release the first Portable Copy-compatible Blu-ray disc moves "later this year," but they don't have a specific time frame nailed down. So Kotaku nailed something else down instead.

After a little more coercion of the sort, they said that the technology is actually still under development, and so Sony themselves are unclear as to whether or not a PSP firmware update will be required to make the whole thing go.

And the rest... is silence.

Review: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is One of the Best PSP Games Ever Crafted

What the Game's About
Everyone knows the story of Final Fantasy VII and the ventures of Cloud and the group of Avalanche as they fought against the tyrannical Shinra Electric Company. What you don't know is the events that led up to that story and what happened within Shinra and Soldier that led to the catastrophic events of the Nibelhiem massacre. Despite only having a minor sequence in Final Fantasy VII, Zack actually had a major impact on the character of Cloud, which is fully explained with Crisis Core. Aside from seeing the story unfold through the eyes of Zack, you also get to see a side of Sephiroth that you never thought you would -- a likable human side. There is no denying that this is a powerful and moving title that Final Fantasy VII die-hards – and perhaps even those of us who aren't the biggest FFVII fans – will instantly fall in love with.

Sony Says Three-Year Old PSP Still Has a Long Life Ahead

Launched on March 24th, 2005, the Sony PlayStation Portable, perhaps better known as the PSP, has been on the market for three years now, and while for consoles, that would be practically over half its lifespan, portable gaming seems to follow a somewhat different cycle. Furthermore, Sony has demonstrated an uncanny tendency to keep their consoles running, even after the point most others would be considered dead in the water.

So it comes as little surprise that in an interview with IGN, PSP Marketing Manager John Koller would assert that the PSP's lifespan has only just begun, predicting a 10-year cycle shared by its Sony contemporaries. However, that doesn't mean that the machine itself will be the same crossing the finish line as it was when it started the race.

"We've talked about the PSP being a 10 year product," Koller said. "But a 10 year product in the continued... how can I put this... in the continued lifecycle, so we obviously had the 1000, we have the 2000, so the PSP as it was first launched in March 2005 isn't going to the be the PSP that it ends up as in 10 years, but it will still be a very strong portable gaming device that is centered in gaming and has a lot of multi-functional features."
