PSP Go: Sony's Plan All Along

It has become a Sony standard that with the release of each new console, a new type of media must be integrated. Following the first PlayStation, we saw advancements in each subsequent generation, from DVD playback on the PS2, to the PSP's UMD drive and finally the Blu-ray enabled PS3. The PSP Go hopes to take this one step further by removing tangible media altogether and making it completely digital. And according to Sony, this has been their plan all along.

Of PlayStation Portables, Networks, and Mega Men

Mega Man fans are a hopeful lot. We spent the past decade and some change hoping for a new title in the Classic series, and in that regard, we got lucky with Mega Man 9 taking the video game world by storm last year. However, that seems to be the rare instance.

As I have made no secret of, a new title in the Mega Man Legends series is also highly desired. So much so, in fact, that a number of fans (myself included) are quite willing to settle for re-releases of the original titles, be it by way of Virtual Console and PlayStation Network, or even on a Collection disc, the likes of which both the original Mega Man and X have seen. All so we can share the love with people who have not yet experienced it, as well as show our support for a new entry with our dollars. Sadly, nothing of the sort lay on the horizon.

Fortunately, that's not the case for the two PlayStation Portable titles, Mega Man Powered Up and Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X.

Rumor: Sony Assembling PSP Phone Team

Sony may be feeling the pressure from Apple to create their own smart phone gaming console. According to unconfirmed reports from the Nikkei business daily, Sony is putting together a team to explore the possibilities of combining the PSP Go! with a type of Ericsson mobile phone. The team's goal would be create a device to directly compete with smart phones that having mobile gaming capability.

Sony has not confirmed or denied the reports of assembling this team, but with the success of the Apple's iPhone, Sony can't brush away the competition's success easily. It would make sense for Sony to explore this possibility, as other Japanese developers such as Square Enix, Sega and Capcom have all created apps for the iPhone and iTouch.

The PSP brand has had trouble in the past solidifying it's purpose, as Sony has also had a number of non-gaming applications for download (clocks, calculators, etc). If Sony feels that Apple is cutting into its mobile gaming market, is it only a matter of time before Nintendo explores a phone option?

Capcom Classics Collection Remixed Comes to PlayStation Network

Capcom has a new guy among their blogs now who goes by the name of Ryan. This is significant because it is Ryan's job to inform us of the classic Capcom games from the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation Portable libraries which will be made available over the PlayStation Network in the coming months. For this, we like Ryan.

And the first game up? Capcom Classics Collection Remixed, which is available for download only on the PlayStation Portable; sorry, PS3 owners.

Available July 2nd, the CCCR package contains 20 retro classics, including Strider, Final Fight, Captain Commando, Bionic Commando, 1941, and Street Fighter. Just. Plain. Street Fighter.

And for the sake of full disclosure, I even have my name in there. And I don't mean a guy with my name-- I mean, literally, me.

Hit the cut for the full list of included games.

Media: New Gran Turismo Screens Look Too Good to Be Believed

GT Planet has gotten ahold of some new screenshots for the upcoming PSP Gran Turismo game (which we've conveniently mirrored for you in our gallery), and all I can say is that these look too good to be believed. There's a lot of back-and-forth in their comments about the legitimacy of the images, with some saying that it's from a cutscene, while others who say they've played it at E3 claim it's the real deal.

What do you think?

How to Raise a PSP to "Go" Standards for Less Money and Four Months Earlier

The $250 price tag for Sony's PSP Go, slated for release this October, has done little to earn the handheld revision any new friends. In fact, upon learning of what the battery life is for the UMD-less PlayStation Portable, it has probably left some people scratching their heads as to whether or not the upgrade is worthwhile.

But, unless having a foldaway controller or Bluetooth functionality is all you ever really wanted, then it seems there is currently an easier solution. PSP World, unhappy about the new price, decided to shop around, and discovered that one of the system's other big selling points-- its 16GB of internal memory-- is already available in another form.

GTA: Chinatown Wars Coming to PSP

Despite its critical success, GTA: Chinatown Wars didn't sell well for the DS. Rave reviews couldn't push it above moving 90,000 units in the month of its release, March. It is, in my opinion, a great game worthy of much more attention. Many believe that the title's poor sales figures stem from the platform for which it sells. GTA is a mature brand looking for support from a youth audience, generically speaking. The buyers just aren't there.

So onward they go to the PSP. Take-Two Interactive will be publishing a graphically polished and extended version of Chinatown wars on both UMD and the PSN for the PSP this fall.

Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar, spoke concerning the news this morning, "We're proud to extend this truly unique handheld Grand Theft Auto experience to PSP and offer a downloadable version of Chinatown Wars for PSPgo...Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series."

If the PSP's version sells well, will the DS and Nintendo be abandoned by Rockstar?

Imagine the Possibilities: PSP Go Functions Whether Open or Shut

What can go up a chimney down, but not down a chimney up? What gets wetter the more it dries? And what can play games whether it's open or closed?

Well, in the case of the last one, it would be the PSP Go, apparently (and for the rest, if you need to be told, then you should go back to riddle school). Though nothing is immediately planned, game-wise, to make use of nothing more than the PSP Go's L and R buttons, Joystiq confirmed with Sony that the space-conscious traveler can indeed theoretically take advantage of the handheld's uses in its more compact form.

"Users will be able to access content and applications on the XMB such as videos, music and Skype when the panel is closed -- but users will need to launch the application first before closing the panel," a Sony rep clarifies. And should such an L/R-based game come along, that will work, too, as well as other "original applications" like the clock and calendar.

The PSP Go Gets How Much Battery Life?

I have to admit, Sony's reveal of the PSP Go has certainly reinvigorated discussion about the company's handheld console, even if it's mostly about the console itself, rather than any of the games available for it.

To wit, it seems that some further concerns about this latest iteration of the PlayStation Portable hardware has raised some questions. Questions which Sony themselves have chosen to answer. Questions like, "what kind of battery life can we expect from this thing?

Kojima Discusses His Involvement in MGS: Peace Walker, the Nature of Rising, and "The Love Box"

Despite his desire to avoid further involvement in Metal Gear and instead create something new, Hideo Kojima is back in the saddle again for the PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. We know that Kojima doesn't so much seem to be a liar, so much as he just can't seem to pull himself away, but after the conclusiveness of Metal Gear Solid 4, what could possibly have brought him back to the fold this time?

"At first, I was just going to create the overall guidelines and concepts for the project, and leave it in the hands my excellent staff," Kojima told Dengeki: PlayStation during a recent interview.

Retailers Flustered by Emergence of PSP Go; Customers Really Don't Seem to Care

As one might expect, there are those in the game industry who are not entirely pleased with Sony's unveiling of the PlayStation Portable Go. Specifically, those who earn their keep working in the retail sector of the industry.

Via Itai News, Sankaku Complex reports that the UMD-less device "has filled game retailers with terror and anger," as they can now see where things may eventually be headed.

One "shopkeep," presumably Japanese, expressed his concerns, which you can find after the cut.

Pachter Apologizes to Sony for PSP Go Remarks

Now, in the debut of a new column at IndustryGamers, it would seem he's begun to feel some remorse over what was said, and has offered up his apologies to Sony.
