Home Was "Too Ambitious" with Non-Gaming Apps, Says Reeves

So, we know that Home has been delayed yet again, leaving the simple question of "why?" Fortunately, Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe President David Reeves has the answers. And even more fortunately, he's willing to share.

In a brief interview at Sony Gamers' Day, he admit that they wanted to be sure that the game-interactive features, such as trophies and Home-to-game launching, would be good to go when the product is finished.

"It is definitely coming out in autumn," assured Reeves. "Whether that's October or November, I don't precisely know, but it is an open beta."

"We've realized that maybe we were too ambitious with the non-gaming applications within Home, getting sponsors and stuff like that," he went on to confess, adding that "In that sense we were deserting gamers. So, we're concentrating on the gaming by launching games in Home, and attracting people who are into gaming in first - instead of the Nike people, or Adidas people who are into fashion and not necessarily into gaming."

Single-player and Co-op Haze Demo Hits PlayStation Store

In addition to the GRID demo now available, there's another demo you have to download and check out today -- although it's only PlayStation 3 gamers that can get their hands on this one. Ubisoft has released the demo it promised of Haze a few weeks back; a demo featuring a level from the campaign mode, which is playable either by a single person or two players via co-op. What's more, the co-op mode features two-player split-screen, online support and drop-in-drop-out functionality.

And, don't forget, the full game releases later this month.

Rockstar Fixes PS3 GTA IV, Apologizes for Inconvenience

After releasing a patch yesterday to fix online issues had by the PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar has issued an apology to all those affected by the issues.

The patch, according to the company, "prevents Gamespy's servers from being overloaded and therefore reduces the impact on those servers that were causing the game to stutter and lock up."

Stating that they would keep a closer eye on things, they told CVG "We continue to monitor the performance of the game both on and offline and will provide further updates as necessary."

"We want to assure everyone that, together with our hardware partners, we continue to strive to give our fans the best possible interactive entertainment experiences possible. This update will ensure that everyone will experience Grand Theft Auto IV the way it was intended."

"We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused."

Media: LittleBigPlanet Open Beta Now DOA; Have Some Video Instead

It has to be tough to be a PlayStation 3 owner right now. Besides Home, there's also disappointment surrounding LittleBigPlanet; in addition to being delayed, the open beta isn't happening, according to Community Development Manager Sam Bennett and Producer Pete Smith. The game will of course still be beta-tested, but only by groups internal to Sony.

There are small rumblings of a small number of gamers being invited to the beta phase, possibly even a demo, but it's all far from certain right now.

So, until that happens, check out the gameplay video after the cut.

EA Sports' Peter Moore Just Wants to Go Home

Oh, Peter Moore... things just haven't been the same without you at Microsoft to exchange barbs with Sony. Lucky for us, it seems you're still comfortable doing that from your new chair over at EA Sports.

For old times' sake, Moore took a shot this past week at Sony, specifically their oft delayed but seldom played Home project, the Second Life-ish application they've been touting as a key feature of the PlayStation 3 for going on 2 years now. Moore's comments came shortly after Hirai apologized once again for delays to Sony's Home-coming, stating that "We've been testing Home for some time and I simply feel that as great as Home currently is, it needs a little bit more time before it's ready for the wider public - something we firmly believe we can provide in the autumn."

Eurogamer asked Moore if he was interested in working with the one-time rival's Home project, prompting him to say, "Yeah; I just wish it would ship. I [previously] questioned it a little bit, whether I'd want to wander around there. Phil Harrison showed me a demo - it's very cool, but let's go already. And so I'm disappointed that it's been pushed back a little bit again."

"But I really hope it gets going and becomes that portal to the PlayStation Network and we can utilise it. But boy, I just wish we'd get going."

PS3 Ad Banned in UK for Being "Misleading"

Some jolly interesting news from across the pond regarding those boyos at Sony of Europe, as a recent ad for the PlayStation 3 was banned for including "misleading" phrases that would seem to imply that all iterations of the console would play PlayStation 2 games. What poppycock that is!

As we all know, the 40GB models are without such compatibility, leading the Advertising Standards Authority to say "balderdash!" to the ad's use of the phrase "and it plays your PS2 games as well," citing a breach of CAP TV Advertising Standards Code rule 5.1, aka "misleading advertising," and that the ad should not appear again in its current form.

Even though both DSG Retail (parent company of PC World magazine, wherein the ad ran) and the ASA, "around 80 percent of PS2 software is compatible with 60GB PlayStation 3s," but the ASA still says the wording has to go. Bully for them!

Kaz Hirai: PS3 Will "Reclaim Lead"

It's been a long time since "It's RIDGE RAAACER!". With sales matching the 360 in the months past and a narrow difference in sales in the last month's NPD numbers, the PS3 is no longer a George Foreman Grill-sized joke. The real question is, how much farther can Sony's comeback take them? If you ask SCE President Kaz Hirai, it'll take them all the way back to the top of the pack.

"I am very confident that after the 10-year lifecycle we will have the install base that we are looking for and that is obviously to be in the leadership position," Hirai said.

Sony has pushed this "10-year master plan" from the very beginning, and now it looks like it could be coming to fruition, or at least it doesn't seem as ridiculous or far-fetched as it used to do.

And while the crucial stages of development in the PS3's lifecycle are yet to come, Hirai stressed that Sony is indeed looking to the future.

"It's very difficult to [say something about future consoles] at this point in time," he said.

"We need to take a look at advances in technology in various areas, such as semiconductors, graphics chips, output devices, mainly TV and monitors, to see where we would like to benchmark our next generation product."

Japanese Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundles Limited to 100,000

Remember the new MGS4 PlayStation 3 bundle with extra Sixaxis controller we mentioned last week? Well, if you want one, you'll need to move fast, as word from the Mainichi Shimbun news website is that this will be limited to a run of somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 units.

However, for Konami's bundle, which includes the gunmetal steel PS3 unit, there has been no planned quantity revealed. Smart thing to do if you want one, though, would be not to mess around. Assuming there are any left.

Of course, since they're releasing that one over here, it may not be as worth one's while to go to any great lengths for Japan's version, unless you just really hate David Hayter for some reason. But why would you go and do a thing like that?

Grand Theft Auto IV for PlayStation 3 Gets Patched

"A GTA IV patch? Why, what on Earth for?" you might be asking yourself.

Well, it seems that PS3 players have been experiencing stuttering gameplay and lock-ups to the online portion. Here's what they have to say about the fix:

Ok, so there are these guys... and they're clearly at war or something, and... well, I don't know. I assume each side's plan is to shoot until the other side is dead, and they win. I mean, that's usually how it goes, right?

Oh, and since it's on PS3, I'm sure it'll look really, really good. Really.

Review: Echochrome is a Must-play for PSN Gamers

Echochrome is a unique game that takes its inspiration directly from art. The MC Escher-inspired game is the first unique puzzle title of 2008. You play as a figure walking around on simple geometry trying to collect checkpoints. The only catch is that special laws apply to the world of Echochrome. If you perceive something in a certain perspective, it is the truth. For example, if you see a hole, find another block to cover it up and your character will walk over it as if it never existed. There are other special laws that the world of Echochrome is governed by but they are hard to explain, they truly must be seen to be believed. Even after a few levels, your brain will be knotted up trying to visually solve the puzzle. Even if you blow through the main levels, you are given free reign to create a puzzle however you see fit.
