Kaz Hirai Says the Darndest Things, Episode 147: "We're Not Competing with Microsoft or Nintendo"

If you can't beat 'em, fight something hundreds of times bigger. That's Kaz Hirai's brand new saying, kinda.

"I think that PS3, PS2 and PSP are all entertainment platforms so I feel that our competition is not Microsoft or Nintendo, but basically any form of entertainment that is competing for the consumers' attention," said Hirai in an interview with MCV.

Mmmm 'kay. Does that mean Nintendo and Microsoft win by default? No? Just makin' sure.

And while I think this is certainly an admirable goal, Sony's buying into their own hype a little too much. Nintendo and Microsoft are, with each game they churn out and each console they place into the hands of customers, making cash that could be lining Sony's pockets. Competition? I think so.

Oh, Hirai's comment was simply an exaggerated expression of hubris? Well, this is awkward.

Activision's First Bond Game Running on Call of Duty 4 Engine, Preemptively Blowing Our Minds

James Bond, a master spy if ever there was one, always has dibs on the most cutting-edge technology. Cars, weapons, and even combinations of the two -- he so often gets his hands on shiny, new death-dealing implements that he's restrained his natural human tendency to bellow at the top of his lungs, "That was f***ing awesome!" And now, he's adding another piece of gear to his arsenal: Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 engine.

In Activision's conference call yesterday, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith revealed the first details on the suit-clad wonder's latest outing. "We look forward to launching Bond: Quantum of Solace in Q3 concurrent with movie," he said. "This game uses the Call of Duty 4 engine and technology to bring Bond games to a new level."

Could this signal a return to form for Bond, James Bond? Call of Duty 4 was, far and away, one of last year's most eye-searingly beautiful games, so here's hoping.

But, odds are, most gamers would very much like for it to be the next Goldeneye, and I fear they'll need to stock up on Kleenex boxes, 'cause it ain't happening. Nor will it ever. Nostalgia being what it is, no game featuring the eponymous super spy will ever take a moonraker to our rose-tinted memories.

Even so, I blindly and naively pray that I'm incorrect, and hope that I'm proven wrong when James Bond: Quantum of Solace launches alongside its corresponding movie on November 7.

EA to Bring Skate Spin-off, Skate It, to Wii and DS

Remember when IGN accidentally published a story last month, revealing that Skate is coming to Wii and DS, only to immediately pull the article without explanation? No? Well, it's true.

But now, today, IGN is officially reporting that Electronic Arts is developing Skate It for Wii and DS, a spin-off installment in the Skate series. Skate, which launched on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last fall, is well-known for mixing up the skateboarder genre with its unconventional control system -- one that employed use of the analog stick for tricks rather than face buttons, as Tony Hawk has for so many years. Skate It, meanwhile, will use the Wii-mote's motion controls and DS touch-screen for its control configuration. What's more, the Wii version will support the Wii Balance Board.

The game will officially be announced next week at an Electronic Arts press event in San Francisco. We'll be at the event and will be sure to let you know what we think if we get to see or play it.

EA Borrows $1 Billion to Help Swallow Take Two

Well folks, this just got a tad more real.

Electronic Arts has taken out a $1 billion load from Morgan Stanley and lenders to help pay for its acquisition of Take Two, should it ever happen. The figure was revealed in recently released SEC filings. According to EA VP of communications Jeff Brown, "There's no news here. This is just a process point on something we announced in February."

As Kotaku points out, EA's got plenty of cash on hand to purchase Take Two, so why borrow more? "It helps us maintain maximum flexibility for any opportunities," Brown further noted.

Take Two hasn't given a comment at this time.

Feature: The Top 5: 05.09.2008

Every week, the game industry is blasted with enough news to make your head spin. It can be hard to keep track of the week's most important news stories. That's what The Top 5 is for. The Top 5 is a weekly column in which Kombo.com Senior Editorialist Lucas DeWoody looks back at the top 5 best, worst and most important news stories of the week, editorializing on each one as he goes along.

Without further ado, this week's Top 5 are…

Stop Uwe Boll, Get Free Gum

Look in the bargain bin of any video store and you are bound to find such "classics" as BloodRayne II, House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, and Deliverance. All of that crap can be blamed on Uwe Boll, reviled German movie director and bane of the gaming industry for his horrible video game to film translations. Being a crazed defender of his own work (three of which are in IMDb's bottom 100), Boll once claimed that if over one million people wanted him to stop making movies, he would retire. You all knew where this was going, right? Petitiononline.com jumped right on the cause. Currently the petition stands at 263,000+ signatures and growing. To make this even funnier, Stride Gum announced that it will give out a million packs of gum if the petition reaches one million by May 14.

Industry Consequences:

Go to StopUweBoll.org. There is likely no petition on Earth that could stop this man, but go ahead and sign it anyway. Maybe we can get another nice portrait out of him if it hits 750,000 signatures.

The countdown continues inside.

New Bizarre Creations IPs in 2009 Appear Likely

Bizarre Creations, now part of Activision, is "deep in development" on two multi-platform titles (probably for the PS3 and 360).

The news came during Activision's conference call held yesterday (hear it at the 29:55 mark). Publishing CEO Mike Griffith noted that "Bizarre is deep in development on two multi-platform titles and we are looking forward to the release of our first new racing IP in fiscal 2010, which already looks very strong." For those not in the know, Activision's fiscal 2010 year begins on April 1, 2009.

Bizarre, take it away from the city with this one. The Project Gotham series was great fun, but I want to see where else you can take it. Oh, you're already considering it? Kudos to you then, good sirs!

"PSP Needs More Games," Admits SCEE President Reeves

Some might say that the problem exists everywhere, but Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's President David Reeves admits that their platform with the emphasis on being Portable is suffering from a lack of games in that region.

Even though there are new functions, such as Go! Explore satellite-navigation application and cross-platform functions with the monolithic PlayStation 3, Sony's recent Gamer's Day saw only two games, Echocrome and Buzz! Quiz Master, mentioned during their one and one-half hour presentation.

"Hand on heart, would we like more PSP games? Yes, we would. We really would," Reeves told GamesIndustry.biz.

PSP-exclusive content seems to be on the downturn, though companies such as Sierra are still developing games for the eight-year old PlayStation 2, with the majority of what's left being larger licenses such as WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 and LEGO Indiana Jones (available for all major gaming platforms).

Feature: 8 Things We Want to See in GTA

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/8_Things_We_Want_to_See_in_GTA'; digg_skin ='';
Grand Theft Auto IV has only been out for little more than a week, and yet we can't help but think about the future of the series. Thinking about future GTA installments, we've come up with a list of things we'd like to see in forthcoming installments of the GTA series. While reading it over, keep in mind we're aware that many of these things are unrealistic at this point in time because there are technological barriers that prevent them from being included in the immediate successor to GTA IV. What we've put together is a dream list -- an outline of just some of the biggest things that would help create the ultimate GTA game.

In-car View
Grand Theft Auto IV already has an in-car view, but it's not too impressive. We want completely detailed, in-cockpit views for every automobile in the game -- see Gran Turismo 5 for an example of this in action. Considering GTA IV features a fairly detailed interior model of the taxi, which you get to see when you take a cab ride across Liberty City, we know that Rockstar can pull this off.

More inside.

CoD5 Going 'Military Theater', Coming to All Platforms except PSP

Infinity Ward set servers on fire last year by propelling Call of Duty into the modern era. If rumors hold true, CoD3 developer Treyarch will be stepping up to develop the next game in the series, which will probably launch later in the year.

According to Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith, CoD5 will "bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theater." The game is scheduled to be released "on all four platforms we've participated on in fiscal 2008", meaning the PS3, 360, DS and PC. Oh, and it's coming to the Wii and PS2 as well.

Hands-on: Code Lyoko: Fall of X.A.N.A.

Recently the guys over at The Game Factory were kind enough to ship us a preview build of their upcoming game, Code Lyoko: Fall of X.A.N.A.. The game is a sequel of sorts to the first Code Lyoko game that was released for the DS last year. Fall of X.A.N.A. focuses in on the 4th season of the popular animated series, and the gameplay is a mix of RPG and adventure elements that spans through both the real and virtual world. So what else in store for the upcoming release, and what did we think so far? Keep reading to find out.

We were able to spend a good amount of time with the game, and we were pretty impressed by the number of changes made to the overall gameplay formula from the first Code Lyoko title to this one. For starters, combat is now handled via traditional turn-based RPG encounters. Rather than just recycle the work done for the first game's battle system, The Game Factory has decided to really put some serious time and effort into the evolution of the series.

Rumor: Microsoft to Show-Off Motion Controller with New Banjo Kazooie Next Week

So, we're pretty sure Microsoft is hammering together some kind of motion controller -- even in spite of their many denials. Repeated rumors like this have a way of panning out eventually (see: Resident Evil 4 on PS2, Okami for Wii, and, ironically, Xbox 360's Banjo Kazooie 3). But when will Microsoft finally remove the cats from their tongues and confirm our beliefs?

Well, if Kotaku's sources are to be believed, we're looking at an unveil as early as next week. Now, don't clear out a some closet space for your Wii just yet -- Microsoft's little peep show might be press-only, with embargoes keeping those lucky journalists' mouths locked tight.

Here's where things get a little sticky, though: At the very least, whatever Microsoft pulls out of their collective hat next Tuesday (which, if nothing else, will be Banjo Kazooie 3) will be available for public viewing before the press event even happens. Either Microsoft has already been fairly candid with whatever they're going to announce next Tuesday, or Banjo's going back to the future.

But how do these two seemingly disparate tidbits relate to one another? Amongst the many rumors that have been spilling from Microsoft's colossal form, it's been hinted that Banjo and the Microsoft motion doo-hickey plan to team up in the manbear's latest outing -- much to Kazooie's chagrin, I'm betting.

With any luck, we'll have a clearer view of things when the fog clears on Tuesday.
