Japanese Gamers To Get Feather Stylus For Pre-Ordering New Zelda Game

Remember back in 2007 when Nintendo gave a special feather stylus to those avid Zelda fans who pre-ordered Phantom Hourglass? It seems history does in fact repeat itself, as Nintendo is doing this again, only this time with the upcoming Zelda game for DS, Spirit Tracks.

According to Kotaku, anyone who pre-orders Spirit Tracks in Japan will receive the special stylus. Sadly, this gift is apparently Japan-exclusive at the moment. Perhaps Nintendo will soon announce a similar promotion for North America and/or Europe.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is due for release in North America on December 7th, and the 11th for Europe; Japanese players will have to wait a bit longer, as it is released there on the 23rd.

During the aforementioned question and answer session with Nintendo EAD General Manager Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and Zelda (among others) took a little time to speak out about the latter creation.
Nintendo Looking to Amazon Kindle for 3G DS?

Nintendo's DS reissue train will keep rolling, if President Satoru Iwata has anything to say about it. In an analyst briefing following the company's announcement of lowered financials and the new DSi XL, Iwata confirmed that the company is looking to a popular 3G portable device for inspiration...and it isn't the iPhone.

Only people who can pay thousands of yen a month [in mobile phone subscriptions] can be iPhone customers. That doesn't fit Nintendo customers because we make amusement products," Mr Iwata said. The Kindle's one-off cost would better suit Nintendo's customer base, he said. "In reality, if we did this it would increase the cost of the hardware, and customers would complain about Nintendo putting prices up, but it is one option for the future.

Could Nintendo be looking to equip their super-popular handheld with 3G technology in the future? Such a move would be in line with current rumors.

New Super Mario Bros. Nearing the 20 Million Units Sold Mark

After going through the financial results for the current fiscal year, Nintendo reported that New Super Mario Brothers on Nintendo DS has sold 19,940,000 units worldwide so far. Also, keep in mind the game came out in 2006.

Mario Kart DS has sold 16,090,000 to date and Mario Kart Wii trails behind New Super Mario Brothers with 18,360,000 units sold.

I can't even imagine the numbers that New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to produce. I do know that I cannot wait to play that game so you can count me in on being a part of the 50 gazillion that sells.

"Rise to Heaven: Five Years of Nintendo DS"

This week, Nintendo announced the newest iteration of their ultra-successful handheld, the DSi XL, or as I like to call it, the D6L. And the timing was apt, as we are just a month shy of the fifth anniversary of its launch in North America on November 21st, 2004.

In some ways, it's kind of hard to believe that it has been five years, but it would likely be safe to say that a lot of people have a lot of memories invested in that machine, and it has definitely helped to change the face of Nintendo, as well as the face of gaming itself. Former Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi said in February of that year that "if the DS succeeds, we will rise to heaven, but if it fails we will sink to hell."

Looking at Nintendo now, it's hard to dispute that they have indeed risen, and 1UP has taken a look back at the short but successful history of the handheld which managed to finally put the Game Boy, which itself celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, to rest. Check it all out in "Rise to Heaven: Five Years of Nintendo DS."

DSi XL Size Comparisons and Video

The Nintendo DSi XL appears to be quite a handful, as the above image features a mock-up of the Nintendo D6L (it's just easier to type it that way) positioned next to a Wii case for a sense of scale. Yikes. We saw when it was revealed yesterday how big the unit is compared to its contemporaries, but being positioned next to the case just makes it seem even bigger, doesn't it?

More comparisons and a video of it in action after the cut.

Analyst: New Nintendo Portable Coming 2010

Yeah, you read that title right, and we're not talking about the DSi XL. On top of the news about Nintendo's redesigned DSi, Director of KBC Securities Japan Hiroshi Kamide expects 2010 to be the year of a new Nintendo portable.

"It's just not realistic for [Nintendo] to repeat what they did last year," Kamide told the Associated Press. "[2009 is] a bit of a filler year. Next year, I still suspect there's a new handheld turning up."

Kamide's suspicion isn't unfounded. Aside from whatever tactical promise 2010 holds, information about the new portable's hardware has also surfaced.

Earlier this month we reported on a contract between Nintendo and graphics-card manufacturer Nvidia to use their graphics-intensive Tegra chip. There are also rumors that the new portable will be backwards compatible.

With one new SKU already officially slated for 2010, will there really be room on the market for a DS successor? And if so, will that successor simply be a beefed up DS, or does Nintendo have something entirely new up their sleeve?

Nintendo DSi XL Confirmed for North America in Early 2010

Nintendo surprised, well, pretty much no one this morning when it confirmed the existence of the new DSi LL, or, as it will be called outside of Japan, the DSi XL. While Nintendo's European division was quick to peg the fourth iteration of the Nintendo DS for a 2010 release, but what about across the pond? Well, Nintendo of America has broken their silence on the matter, and have confirmed to Kotaku that the DSi XL will be launching in early 2010.

"A new iteration of the Nintendo DSi system will be introduced in Japan on November 21, 2009. To be known as Nintendo DSi LL in Japan, and as Nintendo DSi XL in North America and Europe, it will offer a screen 93% larger than the current Nintendo DS Lite with a better view angle, an additional longer touch screen stylus, and preinstalled Nintendo DSiWare software. The new version will arrive in North America and Europe in the first quarter of calendar year 2010.

Of course, Nintendo did not confirm an MSRP for the console, like Japan and Europe, expect it to be more than the $169.99 tag on the current DSi.

D3Publisher Publishing Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow for DS

While Ignition Entertainment handled the previous Blue Dragon game on the Nintendo DS, D3Publisher will be taking over for the next, Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow. Developed by tri-Crescendo, the same company behind games such as Eternal Sonata and Baten Kaitos, the game is more of a traditional RPG than the RTS-infused Blue Dragon Plus, and features some unique new gameplay concepts.

Players take the role of a character created by the player, who joins up with Shu and the gang on their latest adventure, set two years after the Xbox 360 original. Players can customize their own armor and weapons, which changes their visual representation, as well as their "shadow" beasts.

"We are thrilled to bring BLUE DRAGON: AWAKENED SHADOW to DS," said Peter Andrew of D3Publisher. "In the two previously released games, Shu was the main character, but now players can create their own hero and even choose to journey as themselves. We believe returning fans and new audiences will enjoy this unique element in the series."

The game is set for release in Spring of 2010.
