The Houston Chronicle reports that Ofelio Antonio Otero, age 40, has been charged for allegedly shooting and killing his 17-year old son yesterday morning. And the cause of the tension between the two?
A missing video game.
According to the Chronicle, Ofelio had been drinking when he began to argue with his wife at 4:15am over the missing game. Authorities say he then began fighting with his teenage son, Ignacio A. Otero, and loaded his gun during the argument.
"The son then proceeds to try and knock the gun away and then he runs away," said Houston Police Department spokeswoman Jodi Silva.
And as the teen ran, the father allegedly fired a single shot, which struck Ignacio in the back of the neck. He died at the scene, and his father ran away, soon to surrender to HPD SWAT members following a standoff.
Ofelio now faces a murder charge, and is noted as having had a prior criminal history in Harris County, among which a DWI conviction is included. State District Judge Marc Carter doubled Ofelio's bond to $100,000 during his initial appearance in court.
Ofelio's lawyer, Rudy Duarte, asked the judge about lowering the bond, to which Carter responded that "What I'm concerned about is the violence." In addition, if he should make bail, the judge and prosecutor agreed that he should be prohibited from returning to his home, as well as contacting family members who are witnesses.
