ICO Creator Has Interest in Making FPS Games

Fumito Ueda's development studio Team ICO make a very particular type of game: subtle, expansive, impressionistic, third-person adventure experiences. Their games fit that niche so well, it's a little surprising when you hear Ueda say he'd be interested in making other types of games.
In an interview with G4 during the Tokyo Game Show, Ueda said, "I have an interest in making first-person games."
Why FPS's in particular? Ueda cited the Half-Life series' groundbreaking form of storytelling: "Usually, you have to incorporate storytelling with constraints, but the way...[Valve] implemented constraints was something different that I enjoyed, compared to other games.
"[If] ...you're in the middle of play, in the middle of the game, then all of a sudden you're in a cut-scene [and] you're not supposed to operate at all - that's not the kind of game I want to do. If there is some other techniques that will not give them that kind of feeling, that's something I want to implement."
Valve is definitely on-board with Ueda's concept of storytelling. Who knows, maybe someday we'll see a Team ICO/Valve co-developed game.
We can dream....
