Obsidian Wants More Sex

Okay, maybe that title is a bit misleading, but it got you to read this, didn't it? I bet it was the word "sex." Ah yes, sex. Ever since the s*%# storm of media coverage that Mass Effect received because of its sex scene, there has been a bit of an on going debate. Are video games mature enough to handle sex? Play a game like God of War and your opinion may differ from someone who played Mass Effect.
Destructoid recently talked to Chris Avellone of Obsidian about this subject.
"I think it's an important step, and it's not sex for sex's sake, but it's part of human interaction that makes you more involved in the game world and your characters," he says. "Just like in the real world, sex runs the range from entertainment to a symbol of the depth of feeling between two people, and not having that reflected in a role-playing experience feels does RPGs an injustice."
As a mature gamer, I'd really like to believe that sex is something video games can handle. They have come a very long way in terms of being a story-telling medium, just look at Heavy Rain or the Metal Gear Solid series. Sex can be an integral part of passing on a deep story with mature characters, or it can be used as a cheap marketing gimmick. So, I must remind all the game developers reading this of the wise words of Spider-Man, "With great power comes great responsibility."
