Details on the Future of Electronic Gaming Monthly
July 6, 2009 | 12:28 PM PST
A little over a month ago, Electronic Gaming Monthly's original founder, Steve Harris, announced that he had reacquired the rights to the magazine from Ziff Davis. However, he did not disclose what form the reincarnated EGM would take, although the press release mentioned both print and online-based publication.
Well, now a little more light has been shed on the future of EGM. In an interview with Publishing Executive, Steve Harris discussed how the new EGM would bridge the gap between print and online mediums, and that EGM would rely on the gray areas between the two.
"First and foremost, we're planning to incorporate digital content within the magazine," Harris told Publishing Executive. "This includes professionally-produced video, audio and other types of content. We're also going to make this content fully transportable."
By this, Harris means taking advantage of mobile devices such as the iPhone, which more and more people rely on to gather news and information. While EGM will still exist as a print publication, it will also exist as an online publication, with every shade of gray in between used to complement the two. According to Harris, "The new Electronic Gaming Monthly will let you take your magazine and its content from print to computer to wireless devices -- even to your television."
EGM has died. EGM has risen. EGM will come again – apparently in a big way. The things Harris hints at seem like a huge undertaking, but EGM is not set to launch (re-launch?) until the end of this year. More information is bound to trickle down to the public in the months to follow, so keep an eye on EGMNow.com to stay on top of things.
