Blockbuster has decided to throw their hat into the ring of online game rentals next month. Starting June 30th, a pilot program will be launched for online game rentals in Cleveland, Ohio. Customers will be charged on a per game billing cycle format (you only pay for the games you rent), complimented by a small monthly fee.
Blockbuster plans to offer games for the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. In addition, they plan to merge the video game online rentals with their Total Access program for movies. The announcement also said that the pilot program will offer the same in-store exchange benefits as they do with movies.
The grand strategy is for the online game rentals program to be merged with the nationwide Total Access program later this year. Only time will tell if Blockbuster will be successful, but they will be the first company to offer both games and movies online, a very powerful combination.
