January's NPD numbers are out, and to just about everyone its more of the same. I'll give you one guess as to what the top selling system is, it should be pretty easy.
It seems like many in the US may have decided to get "Fit" for the new year. Nintendo systems held the majority of the top 10 with Wii Fit leading the way. Followed by the almost free bundled remote Wii Play and Mario Kart in second and third respectively. Left 4 Dead made a respectable first month appearance followed by Call of Duty: World at War, Skate 2, Guitar Hero World Tour, then followed by a couple old friends and one new one. See the full chart below:
1. WII FIT (WII) 777K
2. WII PLAY W/ REMOTE (WII) 415K
3. MARIO KART W/WHEEL (WII) 292K
4. LEFT 4 DEAD (360) 243K
5. CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR (360) 235K
6. SKATE 2 (360) 199K
7. GUITAR HERO WORLD TOUR (WII) 155K
8. NEW SUPER MARIO BROS (DS) 135K
9. MARIO KART DS (DS) 132K
10. LORD OF THE RINGS: CONQUEST (360) 113K
As for the months hardware, Nintendo dominated there as well. The Wii continues to break sales records, and Sony continues to see struggling sales of it's systems. The Wii and DS led the month with 679.2k and 510.8k units sold respectively which are both positive year over year numbers. A few hundred thousand back was Microsoft's Xbox 360, followed by the PlayStation 3, PSP, and then the PlayStation 2.
1. Wii 679.2K
2. Nintendo DS 510.8K
3. Xbox 360 309K
4. PlayStation 3 203.2K
5. PSP 172.3K
6. PlayStation 2 101.2K
Compared to last January's numbers, here is the year over year change:
WII --- 147.9%
NDS -- 103.5%
360 --- 34.3%
PS3 --- (24.5%)
PSP --- (25.1%)
PS2 --- (61.7%)
One has to wonder how much longer Sony is going to keep the PS3 at its current price points with sales continuing to slump. With a decrease of almost 25% in sales compared to last year things aren't looking too rosey. The 360 is chugging along just fine with an increased install base, and then there is the Wii and DS. Can anything really stop them?
It seems like a mystery as to why the Wii still sells as well as it does month after month so long after launch. One can only guess as to when it will start to slow in sales and supply has met demand.
