Kombo's Guide to Picking Up Gamer Chicks: Part Two
June 27, 2008 | 10:56 AM PST

So, how do you do it? How do you pick up a girl gamer? Below, Kombo's tech editor, Candice Shane, walks you through the process in her three-part guide to picking up gamer chicks.

This is part two of a three-part series. You can read part one here.

Choose Your Own Girl Adventure!
In our last installment, I explained how certain scenarios and a few kind words could make all the difference to where and how you come upon your choice femme gamer. We ran a few blitzes and we knocked a few stereotypes down, ah, but we have to get into the true grit of the age-old questions that plague the men that seek us out.

First off, girls are the very best "Choose Your Own Adventure" book that you'll ever come across. If you mess up just a little bit, there's no problem with flipping a few pages back and studying where you might've gone wrong. Females like us, we're into the smaller things that most other girls might not find fascinating whatsoever. When new characters were announced for Super Smash Brothers Brawl, I was the one cheering along with my male friends while my female friend just gave a low and quizzical "Woo?" What does this mean to you though, right? This means, since now you've found out her interests, don't be afraid to find out more about them. More times than not, if the girl is into you as well, she's doing the same thing as we speak. The female mind is interesting in the way that girls want to be involved in the things their mates or potential suitors are into. Many times, I've picked up hobbies just by learning about the things my boyfriends were really psyched about. Sure, some men might like to think that gaming is "their" thing and they prefer to do it themselves. However, in my time as a girl gamer, I have found that men do like to have significant others that boast the same interests. It keeps things running smoothly because there are common grounds that both of you can share that aren't just the usual staples, ie. music, movies, etc.

So, you found the girl gamer. You've Wikipedia'd the hell out of those obscure games she's into and damn, you might've even tried a few of them out to get an idea about them. The next step is to showcase that you know about things or that you're even interested at all. Set up just casual dates where you go over to your place or hers and you guys try out games you're into. Pick out a game that you guys can play co-op, something that both of you can play and bring a different skill to the table. Some of my best times with my boyfriends were where we could play something together (Halo, Call of Duty, Rock Band, Even Uno if you can't find something to do) and both parties excelled at something. This is a strategic point, trust me. Both you and she will be pleased to be able to spend time together doing something you both enjoy without one being bored to tears.

Say that the relationship starts to get more serious, things are looking up and you two are becoming much closer than you had expected. You're starting to look into more romantic date notions but they're all just a little too vague for a girl like her, right? You want to buy her flowers, do the candy thing, take her out to dinner and woo her - but what if wooing doesn't seem like this girl's cup o'tea? Then what? Find out her secondary interests! Say she likes anime (as I've noticed, girls of our ilk seem to have an open mind to all of those things as well as gaming) and then maybe find her an action figure based on her favorite one. Get her a Manga comic instead of flowers and some Pocky instead of candy. Mix it up. Imagination, I don't care what kind of girl she is, always rules all relationships.

The key to remember when you're courting a girl gamer is that she's more like you than just your hobbies suggest. Show her you're laid back and yet dreamy-eyed over her and you'll get the exact same response. It really is just that simple.

In the next and final installment; I'll answer your questions at length about the topic. Go ahead and send any questions you have to candiceshane@kombo.com or leave your question below in the comments. I'll pick five to six questions and answer them next week!
