Since its initial announcement, very little has been said in regards to the upcoming LEGO Indiana Jones game from LucasArts and Traveller's Tales. Well, little, that is, aside from the eager anticipation from fans and gamers everywhere.
But now, courtesy of EDGE magazine, the first details of the game now known as LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures are out in the open.
Key points to note are that the game is based on the three original 80's movies starring the titular hero, which span three chapters and 18 levels full of all the LEGO-fied features and moments you'd expect.
Of course, it wouldn't be Indy without his whip, which he can use to not only attack enemies, but also to save his blocky hide from certain death by latching on to ledges and scenery.
Moreso than the whip, however, is the use of a "spade" as the key item, which can be used to dig up items, weapons, and ammo, of which LEGO Jones departs the LEGO Star Wars games by providing a limited amount.
One famed aspect of LEGO Star Wars was character switching, which will come into play for characters here as well-- most notably when there are snakes involved. It just had to be snakes. Really, because who'd have it any other way?
The article says the LEGO Indy game will be funnier than that of the LEGO Star Wars title, describing the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark in which Indy shoves the Staff of Ra into a hole in the map room, leading a beam of light to reveal the resting place of the arc. Only this time, it won't be without incident, as Indy could wind up blinded by the intense rays. Or perhaps he'll just burn the entire joint down. It's not said which.
The humor isn't all that's advanced, as EDGE says "Pulling levels to open doors, building platforms to reach them and then destroying them (and everything else) for studs has grown into something more open and explorative."
Traveler's Tales' director, Jon Burton, describes LEGO Indy as "a careful next step" for not only themselves, but the LEGO franchise as a whole.
Which leads us to the issue of the Nazis. It seems that TT has chosen to remove them, and any reference to them, from the games, with "LEGO having already replaced them with an anonymous genocidal, occultist, trenchcoat-wearing master-race."
Well, heck. With a description like that, it could be just about anyone.
The studio explains that it will draw upon the strength of the Indiana Jones characters to show who the bad guys are, but "that said, we like to reinforce the fact that these really are terrible, terrible people," though they don't "want to change the game so much that we lose the audience."
"...and the more things we can keep intact about the formula, the better. If by some chance the game isn't a success, then we'll know it's probably something about Star Wars the works so well".
EDGE slates the game's release as being this June, and you can see more info and screens in the full preview within their current issue, #186, in stores now.

Editor's Take: "Anonymous genocidal, occultist, trenchcoat-wearing master-race?" Why not just call them the Badds or something?
